I have many fond remembrances of Michael but the one that stands out was on an evening that he was taping Squares (Hollywood Squares). He was sort of disheveled and upset (which was not his usual self). He said that he had been filming an episode of Bonanza and in the middle of the filming, all the brass at NBC descended upon the set. They said they were shutting everything down and canceling the show...right in the middle of it! Michael wasn't upset for himself because he knew that he would always work. He was upset for the other actors, the grips, the writers, directors, etc. After all those years together how could NBC take it upon themselves to cancel without any notice. He was beloved by his cast and crew and he was worried about them getting another job. And after all he had been through that day, he showed up to shoot a week of my game shows. I doubt if I would have done that myself.

Can anyone forget the Carson show where he told the world how sick he was?...and yet he did it as if it were a mere headache. He was not only a wonderful actor, director and producer...he was a warm, brave, beautiful human being.
