Michael Landon

I recall as a boy watching Bonanza on Sunday evenings. It was the last TV show my brothers, sister and I were permitted to watch prior to going to bed, and always we pleaded to watch the scenes from the upcoming episode before we headed to our rooms. All of us were taken in by Little Joe's personality. We liked that there were times when he looked for help from his bigger brothers, and other times when he was willing to fight a bad guy on his own. We never cared that none of the Cartwright boys were married, although as the years past, it seemed rather odd. We realize they tried a few times, but marriage simply wasn't in the cards. Something always got in the way. I read somewhere that that is one of the reasons why Pernell Roberts left the show. The family setting was too unbelievable for him to continue any longer.

Then came Little House on the Prairie. I liked the scripts. They routinely pitted good against evil, both on a grown-up and a child's level. The stories pictured the Ingalls family as caring. Led by Charles, they learned to display wisdom and discretion. I liked that Michael was a hard-working, self-sacrificing father who gave and spoke from his heart.

As I grew older, I watched less TV, but I did catch a few Highway to Heaven episodes. Again, Michael's character was one that displayed good, and that's what I see that has survived Michael's passing, the good that he shared with all of us. I realize happy endings are a big part of most scripts. But with Michael, it was more than that. He loved life - the good and hard times -- and wanted us all to share in his enthusiasm for it.

Michael Landon’s work is unbelievable and he touched us all with his shows and performances. He showed how family life is more important than anything and his work will live on forever. Greatly missed. God bless.

Today it’s Christmas, the wonder day for all kids all over the planet. When I was a kid back in the 60s and 70s TV was important to me and all kids. I was very influenced by Bonanza and "was" always Little Joe Cartwright when we played gunslingers. And some years later all in my family was totally hooked by Little House on the Prairie. Yesterday my family was watching an episode of Little House, no. 18 I think, and I just want to say wherever you are Michael thanks - you are a bright star in the sky.
