Earl & Charlene Montgomery
I worked with Michael in the mid-60s, 1965-1966, up until I married Charlene, my wife, on July 22, 1966. I played the (bull) upright bass, sometime electric, and sang baritone with Michael in our group called The Ponderosa Trio at state fairs, rodeos and concerts. He was very much a professional and a gentleman.
I remember very well he had a special love for
children. One time in Shreveport, Louisiana, at a concert in the
Civic Center someone brought a little boy to meet Michael and this
little boy had polio, and was wearing large and heavy braces on his
legs, but when he saw Michael he started trying to run as hard as he
could to get to Michael and Michael fell down on his knees and began
to weep with tears streaming down his cheeks. I have always
remembered that night and told many people about it. |
